Ricki Wynne Crowned Maurice Mullins 80k 2023 Champion

Ricki Wynne was crowned Maurice Mullins 80k 2023 champion after a blistering performance today. This was the first year that IMRA offered an 80k option along with the usual 50k distance later in the day.

The Drumshambo Athletics runner beat off the competitive field of entrants with a fresh-looking finish in a time which earned Wynne a spot in the World Mountain and Trail running world championships in Innsbruck, Austria in June 2023.

The win continues Ricki’s impressive form on the ultra-running scene over the last couple of years. Last year saw him claim 1st place in the Seven Sisters Skyline 55k along with 2nd in the Eco Trail 80k race in September.

Maurice Mullins Legacy

Both races are named after the late Maurice Mullins who was a driving force in the Irish running scene.

His daughter Deirdre Mullins released a short documentary on her late father’s life and battle with Cancer entitled Going The Distance. The film is well worth a watch for any runner and can be viewed on Vimeo here

It’s described as “Maurice’s story is a simple one – he just wants to run again. Through this straight narrative, the film explores how he draws parallels between his years of sports training to how he copes with undergoing chemotherapy.”

“The film brings the viewer face to face with the question of how we will respond when confronted with adversity, with our own mortality and with the loss of our greatest love or passion.”

If you’ve ever wondered just how good the Maurice Mullins Ultras or any IMRA races are, then this video below will show you. Credit to JuJu Jay for the great production. Check out his Facebook page here.
